A screen saver is a program which will darken a computer monitor if it has been on for a long time without use. This prevents unattended monitors from having their phosphor coating damaged by constant illumination. Most screen saver programs have entertaining, dynamic graphics. This allows the individual pixels to rest intermittently while indicating that the monitor is still on.
